Kristen Johnson of A Girl and Her Glitter was one of our winners from this year’s Orange Tank Pitch Competition. She submitted her dream project and presented on stage at the 2019 Haven Conference. Read below how she transformed an empty space into her dream Insta-ready space.
I’m so very excited to present to you this incredible before and after DIY project. The combination of Home Depot decor and DIY projects completed in this makeover will help you get one step closer to being Insta-ready. From the Windows to the WallsLet’s first begin in what I believe is the crown jewel of the room, the removable wallpaper. My husband and I wanted our bedroom to be masculine with touches of femininity. This navy wallpaper with bursts of gold is sheer perfection and something we could both agree on. To apply, you simply peel off the backing and stick onto your wall. This paper is completely renter friendly as well as “change your mind whenever you want” friendly. It applies easily and removes like a dream. The Desk of All TradesWhen shopping for furniture for our master bedroom, I scrolled through so many options on Homedepot.com and found this beauty. The color and all the functional features were a must have. This desk has two drawers; one is deep and great for my taller beauty products, the other is perfect for my slender make up items. The space between these two drawers allowed me to add in pretty baskets with great texture. The adjustable height top also serves as hidden storate for my every day styling items. The desk also has a built in cord management system that cleverly hides and organizes all my cords. Having all of my hot tools stored here makes for such a pleasant look in our room. This desk turned vanity is exactly what we were looking for in this space. Magic Mirror on the WallNothing says chic like a black metal rimmed mirror in your home. Add a full motion tilt-swivel tv mount to your mirror for a simple hack. Now you can pull it forward for close ups and tilt it all around to capture the perfect light when you’re getting insta-ready. When you’re finished, simply swivel the mirror back into place on the wall. Shine Your LightShould you need more lighting in your newly renovated space, this nickel led desk lamp will do just the trick. Having the metals mixed throughout this area creates an eclectic look overall. The silver tone against the gold in the wallpaper causes it to pop and add visual interest. Your Space, Your InfluenceWherever you are in your walk of life, you are have an influence on those around you and deserve a space to call your own. Create a space to get Insta-ready with simple DIY projects and decor from The Home Depot.

Before it gets too cold to do any more outdoor updates around here, we snuck in a fun little project that I’ve been dying to try for, oh 10 years now. Actually the first time I was like “yeah – I want that” was upon seeing one of those cool diamond trellis things waaaay back in 2009 on the outside of this house that we crashed (yes, that’s 10 years ago! Even though I swear 1999 sounds like 10 years ago in my head). I wish we had captured a picture of it for that post, but I think there was blotchy sunlight on it so it didn’t make the final cut. But that family still lives in that house, that diamond trellis continues to thrive, and I continue to gasp at it every time we walk by. It looks a little something like this: source The Diamond Trellis Urge (let’s capitalize it because it has grown into a legitimate condition for me over the years) grew even stronger after we painted our house white last fall. via Tumblr Creating A DIY Vine Trellis I’m hosting various events each month in the evenings at my studio and I was struggling with what to do with my one blank wall in the main gathering area. Originally I was thinking of a credenza + art combo but really I was hoping to give the space a cozier feel. I also had the huge dilemma of a lack of lighting. I’m renting in an older building and there are no wall sconces or overhead lights in this space so it gets really dark in the winter months. With colder months on the horizon, I wanted a solution that would add warmth and light for the season but also not be permanently fixed, so I decided on an electric fireplace + plug in wall sconce combination. I’m pleased with how it turned out because now I have a focal point that’s attractive and practical, but also temporary! I bought this pair of sconces from Lamps Plus, $120 for the pair is a decent price. I purchased them in brushed nickel (they’re also available in bronze) but wanted them to have a gold finish so I spray painted them with my go-to brass lookalike spray paint. Unlike the bronze, the cords on this style are clear so they don’t show up as much against the neutral wall. I’m totally loving my new slim electric fireplace! You’ll notice the stain color is a few shades darker than featured on the website but I’m so happy it is because it adds more contrast. The electric fireplace gives the space extra warmth and ambiance and a little mantel for display. I’m very grateful to Matt for helping me assemble it, I totally appreciate his second pair of hands! If you’re curious about my cord solution, notice how I hide the plug and cords behind the adjacent blanket basket. You can view the opposite wall of my sitting space here. Plug-In Sconces + My Electric Fireplace syndicated from https://wallsgshop.blogspot.com/ via Tumblr Plug-In Sconces + My Electric Fireplace Today we’re sharing how two recent treat yourself moments in our house turned sideways on us and how it shed some light on when to splurge and when to make like Elsa and let it go. One even involves a feature in our bathroom reno that we’ve dreamed about for years, but suddenly can’t seem to justify in actual practice (although it sounds great in theory!). Also after nearly 11,000 people took our “Side Of The Bed” survey, we have some surprising insights about why people sleep where they do. Plus there’s been another Color of the Year development and we find the silver lining to a recent personal event that shook us up. via Tumblr #151: When Is It Worth It To Splurge? Hey there friends. Yesterday I binge watched the new Amazon series Modern Love, all 8 episodes in a row, have you seen it yet? Each episode is a beautiful and different story of how love shows up in many forms, some are real tearjerkers. They are based on the 15 year column Modern Love in the New York Times (it’s also a podcast). I enjoyed every episode, and I can’t wait for a second season! It’s a beautiful day today, sunny with a slight breeze, and the leaves are beginning to fall from the trees. I’m going for a long walk, then hanging my new wall sconces, I’ll share all about them tomorrow! Enjoy your Sunday. My travel companions and I checked into our hotel in an old monastery and drank the coca tea provided, taking it slow to adjust to the altitude, but anxious to explore the town. Cusco is one of the oldest cities in South America and became the center of the Incan Empire in the 13th century. Many travelers come to Cusco as their base before heading into the Sacred Valley on their way to see Machu Picchu, but it’s a special place not to be missed. The main square and surrounding streets are small enough to explore on foot, my most favorite way to get a feel for a city. The baroque architecture, the intricate balconies, the tucked away markets down alleyways, and the locals selling their wares are highlights of a visit to this ancient city. We had amazing meals while we were Cusco. My Peruvian friend Nilda encouraged us to order the traditional preparations of meat and fish and empanadas, and of course, we drank our share of pisco sours. All around Cusco there are opportunities to take photographs with locals dressed in traditional clothing with a llama or alpaca. It costs a few soles but it’s a must for the photo opp. You cannot travel to Peru and not have your picture taken with a llama or alpaca, or why are you really there, really? Just across the street from our hotel where we stayed is the famous San Pedro marketplace, a lively location filled with rows and rows of stalls and it’s here that you can purchase anything Peruvian from food products to textiles to souvenirs. Previously I wrote about the Peruvian textiles I found while exploring Cusco (insert the heart eye emoji). I’m a moth to a flame when it comes to textiles unique to a country, so one of my favorite experiences was strolling the stalls to appreciate the colors and craftsmanship of the locally made goods, and bargaining with the vendors. Quick mention: we also booked a bus that drove us around for a few hours up into the hills beyond the main square so we could see the villages and the statue of Christ monument; you can find these tours for hire all around town or online. I made this trip to Peru with the best travel companions, my longtime friend Nilda (who grew up in Peru) and my travel buddy Gro. In Cusco we met up with Nilda’s brother Carlos, an attorney who lives in Lima. Together the four of us had a blast exploring the city, walking and eating and drinking and sharing stories. We couldn’t wait to continue on the next leg of our journey into the Sacred Valley! If you have any questions about traveling to Cusco, let me know in the comments. In part two of my trip to Peru, I’ll share the story of our incredibly fun adventure in the Sacred Valley through the towns of Urubamba and Ollantaytambo and arriving at our ultimate destination: Machu Picchu. Stay tuned… . via Tumblr How Much Did The Duplex Kitchens Cost? Hello friends, welcome to another week! It seems October has taken a turn toward winter. Last week, we were enjoying sunny skies in the 70s, now the temperature has dropped and we woke up to a chill in the air. I welcome it. The thing I love most about the colder months is the cozy factor. Enter the sheepskin rugs, chenille blankets, lighted candles, and homemade soup on the stove. Once a week I host various gatherings at my studio: podcast discussions, my friend’s nutrition class, and a bi-monthly “wine wednesday”. To warm up the space for winter evenings, I ordered a freestanding electric fireplace. I did a lot of research and thought about building a DIY mantel and surround for an electric insert, but the price and style was right on this freestanding oak fireplace so I ordered it. I plan to paint all but the mantel a matte black. For years many of these freestanding fireplaces have been available in more traditional styles, but good news, here are some contemporary options that will help you add warmth and ambiance to your home! hollis electric (also red and black) harper electric (also gray and sandstone)

Halloween is a big deal to Mallory Nickolaus of Classy Clutter. This year she was able to take advantage of a few Home Depot products, showing how Halloween decor does not have to be scary for young children.
Halloween is a big deal around here! As soon there is even a hint of fall in the air, I am already planning my Halloween decorations and my kids are picking out their costumes! But this year I ran into a bit of a problem. My youngest is a bit afraid of all of the spooky decor and we were all a little nervous about how she would feel about a headless horseman in her front yard haha! We decided that we would all take a trip to The Home Depot so we could all pick out our Halloween decor as a family! I was hoping that if I included her in the decorating process, she wouldn’t be scared. Guess what? It totally worked! Finding Kid-Friendly DecorWe spent Saturday afternoon at The Home Depot looking at all of the Halloween decor and found the best stuff! Mallory and I styled the spooky decorations while the kids were at school and they were so excited when they got home. When it comes to styling my home for holidays, I love to go big! My best tip is to find some larger decor items that can stay with you for years to come. Pieces like this headless horseman and the spiders make such a HUGE impact and I know will be a part of my Halloween decor each year. The Home Depot has several large holiday accents (I almost got this pirate ship!) that will make decorating your home for Halloween so easy! To add some Halloween magic to the inside of my home, the first pieces I switch out are the items on my mantel because it is the main focal point in the room! Everything from the black candlesticks to the skulls are from The Home Depot! How fun are these headstones? These bats I picked up last minute and I am so glad I did! I love how it adds height since the fireplace is so tall. If you are into more minimal Halloween decor, these would be the perfect touch! Plus, they are so easy to put up so you can put them anywhere in your home. I may add these to our older kid’s room next! A few of our neighbors have even popped by to tell us how much they love our decor. It has really set the tone for our street and now our neighbors are starting to put up their Halloween items as well! The post Kid-Friendly Halloween Decor appeared first on The Home Depot Blog. Kid-Friendly Halloween Decor syndicated from https://wallsgshop.blogspot.com/ via Tumblr Kid-Friendly Halloween Decor Our home’s exterior makeover didn’t stop with painting it white last year, so today we’re catching you up on some projects we’ve completed and what’s still to come (and it involves something we’ve changed our minds about twice). We’re also reflecting on a few experiments & interviews over the past 149 episodes that truly changed the way we live in our house – and we’re issuing a challenge to help us all find some new ways to improve our household routines and daily lives. Plus, we look into why someone might buy a house they’ve never seen, located in a town they’ve never been to (!!!). The idea may be less crazy than it sounds… You can download this episode from Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, TuneIn Radio, and Spotify – or listen to it below!
